The Reid Park Zoo Animal Health Center includes the remodel of the existing 1977 health center facility and an addition housing state-of-the-art medical care facilities and animal holding areas. The surgery and treatment rooms are designed for telemedicine and educational outreach, using surgical lights outfitted with high definition cameras. The education room has direct views into surgery, treatment, and pharmacy allowing visitors the opportunity to watch zoo staff in action. Specialized animal holding areas are provided for large, medium and small animals with dimmable skylights to enable the animals to maintain their circadian rhythm while remaining indoors. The lab, pharmacy, and ICU rooms allow keepers and veterinarians to monitor and administer medications for the animals within the facility. Two sleeping rooms for staff and interning college students are included in the office portion of the building.
